Unpacking Our First Home | Our Week in Isolation

– We bought a house! So every Christmas and every birthday, they would get me thingsfor my future home.

– We're all gonna go on an adventure to actually find outwhat is in these boxes because this is almost, what, 12 years later? Maybe this wasn't the best timeto move into an empty house.

(keys clacking) (ringing) Hey, Dad.

– Hi, Steve.

(Stephen laughing) – [Stephen] We have a bit of a problem.

Can I come around the house? (upbeat music)(knocking) – [Mom] Who's at the door? – Hello, Steve.

– Hello.

Got any toilet paper?- We've got one left but you're gonna have to do some chores.

– Okay.

– Okay? Right.

Let's get in the garden.

– Get him into the garden.

So we haven't actually been shopping yet.

I'm very interested to see what it's like trying tobuy supplies for our house when we have nothing inside it right now.

Today's task is to go throughall of Jess's mystery boxes.

Okay, guys.

Welcome to our pile of treasures.

If you missed our last moving vlog, you may not have heard whatthese mystery boxes are but 12 years ago, my parentsdecided that it was a good idea to start giving methings for my future home and I'd never moved into ahome over those 12 years.

So I've kind of accumulateda lot of bits and bobs but also they have been sitting in the garage for 12 years, so I'm not too sure what we're gonna find.

So I think we need gloves and we need to startunpacking and cleaning.

All right.

Let's do this.

Starting off with a classic thing that everyone needs for their house.

What do they call these things? Mortar and pestle set.

(laughing) You know the hard bowl andyou crush the stuff in it? – Are we gonna be doing that?- So random.

I really hope there's someactual plates and stuff in here.

– Well I found a cutlery set.

Just pink polka dots.

– Pink polka dot cutlery!- So loud! – Oh my gosh, look at this.

That's probably like an18 or 19-year-old present.

– Every house needs amagnetic whiteboard eraser.

(laughing) – Oh my.

(upbeat music) – Well, well, well.

Look what I've found.

The famous pink kettle.

– Oh, it's actually cute.

(Stephen laughing) – I'm starting to see atheme with Jess's appliances back in 2007.

There seems to be a colortheme going on here.

– [Jess] Aww, I love the pink kettle! – [Stephen] Some of the, just paper and plasticbags it was wrapped in has disintegrated.

It's been in there for so long.

– [Jess] Oh, that looks like a gravy boat.

– [Stephen] This is just so much fun.

– [Stephen] Fun doing in ourhouse for the very first time.

– Can't believe we canfinally use this stuff.

So I found a card you gaveme on our anniversary.

– Does it say which one? – Yeah, this is ourseventh year anniversary.

We've now been together for 12? – 2007? So what's today, 13 years.

– Oh wow, okay, 13 years.

So this was seven and I think it was just beforewe started Flying the Nest.

– Oh really? – 'Cause what you wrote, “To my beautiful.

” Just, “To my beautiful.

“Happy anniversary.

“I've cherished every minuteof the last seven years “that we've had together.

“So many memories, so many moments.

“This next year should be veryexciting for our relationship “as we go out there andexperience life together.

“I love you forever, Spuzman.

” And then you wrote sevenmoments of things that, like the seven bestmoments of our seven years.

– Oh, okay.

– So you wrote, “One, “when you said yes to startinga relationship with me.

” – Big moment, big moment.

– Very formal.

“Two, going on our first holiday together “and deciding that travel “will always be a part of our lives.

” – Oh wow.

– “Three, “listening to the same music artists “and never getting sick of them.

“Four, all those crazyweird moments together.

(Stephen laughing) “Five, deciding I wanted to be with you “for the rest of my life.

” – Oh, cute.

– “Six, “graduating university together “and closing the chapter of study together “and seven, when yousaid yes to marrying me.

” Oh, that was cute.

Gotta keep that.

– [Stephen] So I'vefound our pots and pans and I know it's very faded but I can see that we got this in 2012.

– Eight-year-old pots and pans that are finally gonna get cooked in.

Once I give them thebiggest clean of my life.

So I just found this little Mix Master and then Stephen's like, “Oh, I remember getting you that.

“And I'm pretty sure I gotthe extended warranty.

” He did, he paid, he paid for extra warranty.

– Because when I think I bought this, we were, this is waybefore Flying the Nest.

I was like, we're gonnamove into our house maybe in the next year.

So I'm getting her anadditional two years 'cause– – But I love that thisis only a hundred dollars and then you were like, “Oh, I need to, “I need to pay for warranty for this.

” So actually it was only $86 and you paid for the extra warranty.

You bought this, it musthave been for my birthday 'cause you bought it twodays before my birthday when I was turning 22.

– [Stephen] Wow.

(Jess laughing) – Oh well, I'm sorry to say, Steve, the warranty I think has run out.

(Stephen laughing) – [Stephen] So we're making progress.

– I've found something thatyou'll be excited about.

– [Stephen] Oh yeah? – See how now we have a pink kettle? – [Stephen] What? – Don't worry, I also havea matching pink toaster.

– Oh no, Jess.

– Yeah! – [Stephen] Do we need to use it? – Yeah.

If I knew what I was getting into all these years ago.

– [Jess] What if it still works? This is what we would take photos on our first ever trip, like back in 2009.

– Oh my gosh, this is like, I think I've just found your memory box or something like that, Steve.

– We made these to explainus Flying the Nest.

I don't know when this tradition started but for Christmas, Ican see Christmas 2010.

Jess would get this, 2009, these little teddy bears, and there's literally a wholebox of them, Valentine's Day.

– Oh wow, I wrote on thebottom when I gave them to you? – That looks like my handwriting.

I might have gone back on it.

Valentine's Day 2010.

– Wow.

– Is this for— That's when you turned 21.

– When I turned 21.

– Oh, what's this one? – [Jess and Steph] Christmas 2008.

– Oh my gosh, we'd have been 18.

– Wow.

(Stephen laughing) (keys clacking) (Jess laughing) So today we had to go and get whooping cough vaccinations and? – I really— What have you, where is it?- Oh, where is it? – Stephen sucks at needlesbut he made it, look.

– It was, at the start I got my lollipop and it was all good.

(Jess laughing) – And then I took him to the car and it all went downhill then.

– I don't do needles at all.

– But you did it.

– I had to.

– So now to celebrate, we're gonna build a bed.

– All right, hopefullyonce we've attacked this a little bit, we don't have to sleepon the floor anymore.

– So we've upgraded to the big guns.

We've got ourselves a drill.

(whirring) ♪ I can see through all the faces ♪ ♪ Telling me to find my place ♪ ♪ And I'm so close that Ican taste it on my tongue ♪ ♪ Tell the king he's overthrown ♪ ♪ Follow where the river's flowin' ♪ – Guys, we finally have a bedroom.

(Jess and Stephen cheering) – [Jess] Oh, I'd laugh sohard if that all broke.

(laughing) – [Stephen] The boxgraveyard continues to grow.

I think we're on a bit of an IKEA roll.

– I know.

I think this is going wellbut it's gonna keep going.

And we haven't showed you yet.

This is our theater room.

So we currently don't have a couch but we did just get our TV installed, put our TV up in the wall.

Stephen's got this little sound system and then he's got his game consoles and then a cabinet but oh, I can't wait'til we get our couch.

– [Stephen] Look at you.

Little pregnant lady on your beanbag.

– Yeah, ready to build a chest of drawers.

– I don't know any 32-week pregnant ladies building IKEA furniture.

(thudding) (Jess laughing) (Jess and Stephen cheering and laughing) – [Jess] If you're wondering where those chest of drawers are going, they're actually going in our guest room.

So we've currently been building this up.

We're trying to makeit like a beachy theme.

We're still waiting forour mattress to come in but I love these lamps we found.

And this print here, itis absolutely massive and it's actually a amazingdrone shot by Salty Wings.

It's one of our favorite kindof photographers here in W.

and it's of our homebeach of Mullaloo Beach.

It's our favorite beach in the area.

So we're gonna put that on the wall and then we're going toinstall this fan up here.

And here is the cupboard 'cause we noticed that in the cupboard there was only a hanger and I thought that if guests come over they're probably going to want to, they're probably gonnawanna have some drawers to put their clothes away.

So wait, let me go down here.

I cannot wait to get that on the wall.

But there you go.

So that's the little cupboard.

– I think everybody shouldjust call me Builder Steve from now onwards.

(loud hammering) (Jess laughing) – [Jess] He told me this is the first time he's ever hammered furnituretogether in his life.

(Jess laughing) (loud hammering) (dramatic classical string music) (toaster clicking) Okay.

I think we're gonna havean exciting morning.

A bunch of boxes just got delivered and I cannot bring them in.

They're way too heavy.

– [Stephen] Oh my goodness.

– [Jess] I cannot wait to open this! – What a fun package to receive.

– [Jess] There's one more out there too.

(Jess laughing) – If this is what I think it is, you're gonna be very excited.

(Jess laughing) (snipping) (ripping) – Can't wait to see it in person.

Oh my gosh.

Oh, it's so cute.

– [Stephen] What havewe just got, Jessica? – So this is our baby bassinet that's gonna go into our bedroom.

Gosh, it looks so nice.

– [Stephen] Looks even better in person.

– Wow, so now we just have to, put the nails in over there.

Oh my gosh, it's so pretty.

So we bought it from a girl in Perth and she gets them made in Indonesia, so all handmade.

– [Stephen] So nice and this is what, she sleeps in this forher first six months-ish? – She's gonna sleep in this in our room.

And then I have a cot for her own room.

Oh, it's so cute.

Wait, let's put it all together.

I'll put the bedding on.

Okay, we've set it all up.

So this is where she's going to live, sleeping right next to us, and we just put our bed linen on.

I got it from Snuggle Hunny Kids and it looks so cute.

This is the first time I've actually felt likewe're going to be parents.

We have a bed and a babybassinet right next to it.

Okay, things are getting official.

We have our stroller.

We got the YOYO stroller by Babyzen and hopefully it's easy to put together.

Let's grab it all out.

– There's a lot.

Wow, there's a lot ofboxes that are in here.

– [Jess] Oh wait, these are theattachments to the car seat.

Whoa, that's heavy.

You do that one.

– Okay.

– I think that's the stroller.

– Yup.

(Jess cheering) – We own a stroller.

That is super compact.

That is nice.

– Oh, right.

(whistling) – She's like a little headrest.

– That's cute.

– But that's not yet.

And then this stays on hereuntil she's six months old.

And then we have one whereshe actually sits up.

– Oh, cool.

– But we'll store that away.

– Oh, that's so cool.

– Wow.

I wanna try.

– Okay.

– So what did you do? So you pushed these in.

– But they go towards you.

– Yeah.

– I think that's what we were doing wrong.

– So like that? – Yeah, and then underneathwhere she will be.

– It's a red thing there.

– But she won't be in therewhen we fold it though.

(laughing) Oh, I see, so then you go like this.

– [Stephen] And then youcan just collapse it in.

– [Jess] Oh, and thenyou can just carry it.

– Yeah.

But of course, we'll get used to that.

– Oh yeah, it said the wheelsneed to be a certain way.

– Can we time it?- This is a game now.

We need a timer to see how quickly you can do it.

– Okay.

All right, we've been having races to see who can put the stroller away.

All right, Jess.

Quickly, we've just jumped off the plane.

There's 20 people behind you.

I wanna go.

I need to immigrate.

What's taking so long? Oop, oop, oop, oop.

And step.

– Let's go! Ready, set, go.

Quick, Steve! The baby's crying, we needto get out of here now.

Oh my gosh, six, seven, eight, nine.

And then walk.

Oh, I think you beat me.

I'm literally puffed.

We just spent, what? A good 30 minutes racing each other? We ended up getting down to a nine seconds of folding that bad boy up.

– Who won? Who won?- Stephen won by one second.

But we're gonna be spendingthe rest of our day getting rid of all these boxes.

So hopefully at the end of the day, this house will be box free.

But the first thing that Iwanna open is this thing.

I have no idea what it is.

Where did you even find it? Under the bed.

– Was it under our bed? – [Stephen] What is? What if we? Is this something? – It's like I found hidden treasure.

I've wanted to know what this is for ages.

– [Stephen] I can't, Ihave no idea what this is.

It's a picture, a painting? – It even looks old.

What is this? – [Stephen] Do you wannaput it down or roll it out? – It actually looks old.

Why? What is it? (Stephen laughing) – [Stephen] It's a big monkey.

(Stephen laughing) – I've been waiting forweeks to see what this is.

– [Stephen] It's a self-portrait.

– [Stephen] Are you gonnapee yourself from laughing? – Because I've been waitingfor weeks for what this is.

Why do we have a big monkey? – [Stephen] Where did we get this from? Like our old trips?- This is massive.

– Where are we gonnaput the big money then? Should we put this above our bed? We've been saying we want some, look at it, it's looking up.

It's like a cheeky monkey.

Why do we have a massive monkey? (laughing) – [Stephen] Why don't we just? – Because I've been waiting all week.

(laughing) Oh my god, it's so.

And she's like, put the camera back up.

– I've calmed down now.

No, because I've found something actually really cool and sentimental.

– [Stephen] Is that not a monkey? – Close your eyes.

– [Stephen] Oh that's so cool.

– So when we first came home after traveling for a full year, when we first started Flying the Nest, Claire wanted to come to the airport and be holding this up for us, but we actually surprisedher and came home, was it two days early? – Yeah.

– In time for your mom's birthday?- Mhmm.

– So we caught her in the house.

Remember she was in her dressing gown and a towel on her head.

She opened up the doorand was so surprised and then she wanted to show us this, and she was working on it that day.

– [Stephen] And that'sour old Flying the Nest logo as well.

– Logo.

We need to keep this.

– Yeah, that's in the mem box.

– With the monkey.

Okay, I found two more cute stuff.

So we found this spray thatyou spray on brown hair and then if you heat it, like with a blow dryer, it probably destroys.

And can you see, how blonde it was? – [Stephen] Aww, Santa.

– Aww, this is really cute 'cause back then when we were 17, my favorite movie was”High School Musical.

” So this was a presentStephen gave me for Christmas and it said, “You are the music in me.

“Merry Christmas 2007.

” – [Stephen] What didyou do when you got it? – I cried.

– [Stephen] Yes.

(Stephen laughing) Cute.

– And there's one more thing.

– [Stephen] One more thing? – Remember that time when I didn't know whatto get you for a present, so then I named a star after you? – [Stephen] Oh yes.

– We definitely have to keep this.

So if you're everlooking in the night sky, this is this star youall need to look for.

It's that star right there.

– [Stephen] And what's this constellation? Is that the Big Dipper? I don't know what that is.

– I don't know but if youknow that constellation and if you look for that star, that star is called Sparry, 'cause in high school, Stephen's name was Sparry 'cause his name was Stephen Parry.

Wasn't it, it said S.

Parry on your pencil case when you first moved to the school and 'cause he was from South Africa, we just thought Sparry might have been like a SouthAfrican name, and it stuck.

And everyone called him Sparry.

It got to a point where it was weird if people called it Stephen.

So the star is called Sparry and then you have a little, here we go.

Our little certificate.

– Oh yeah.

Do you guys wanna seewhat baby Jess looks like? I think I might have been maybe four here.

I'm up to the final box and I think I've found some gold.

First of all, I do havean x-ray of my lungs that I took in Indonesia.

– Oh, yeah! – Gotta keep that.

Back in 2016.

That's really cool, but anyway.

That isn't the coolest thing.

So how old were we? – Oh, I have no idea.

– 19 or 20? Stephen and I had a couple's photo shoot.

(Stephen laughing) I remember it was before you got braces.

'Cause Stephen used to havebraces behind his teeth.

So you couldn't see them.

It was very fancy.

But we did get some printed out on canvas for the day that we moved into a house to put on our wall.

– [Stephen] And that day is now.

– And I have two of them.

– [Stephen] Oh man.

– I have not looked at these in so long.

Oh, they're cute! – [Stephen] No, they're not.

– And you have an afro.

– [Stephen] They're not cute.

– No, that's so cute.

And your little crooked teeth.

The sun has just come up and I've secretly bought eggs, and I'm gonna do somethingfor him for Easter.

It's our first Eastertogether in our house.

So I've made a little egg trail and he has to follow the trail until he gets to the big mama.

And yes, he does sleepin his Disney jammies.

Stevie, it's Easter.

– [Stephen] Huh? – [Jess] It's Easter.

(Jess laughing) – What's the time? – [Jess] 6:00 a.
